Aberfan – Special Memorial Event

Aberfan – Special Memorial Event

Sixty years after the Aberfan disaster, a special live event at Theatr Soar returns to the events of 1966 — and to some of the stories, questions and memories that have followed them.

Sixty years after the Aberfan disaster, a special live event at Theatr Soar returns to the events of 1966 — and to some of the stories, questions and memories that have followed them.

On 21 October 1966, 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a colliery spoil tip collapsed above Aberfan, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes.

Sixty years later, what do we remember?

The tip. The warnings. The rescuers. The National Coal Board. The Tribunal. The Disaster Fund. The journalists and television cameras. The people who came to help. The stories told at the time — and those told in the years since.

What was known before the disaster? What was understood? What happened afterwards? What did people living through those events see and hear — and what could they not yet have known?

And what happens when an event passes from living experience into memory?

Hosted by Neil Anthony Docking, writer of the Olivier-nominated The Revlon Girl, the evening uses scenes from the play as a doorway into a wider story. Performers and contributors bring together testimony, documents, photographs, archive material, music and other voices from across the years.

Some will be familiar.

Others, perhaps, less so.

Together, they take us back to Aberfan — before, during and after 21 October 1966 — and to the people who lived, worked, witnessed, remembered and told its story.

What do we remember?

And why do we remember it that way?
