Composition workshop with David John Roche
Always at the forefront of helping and supporting new music and musicians in Wales, Uproar Ensemble is offering a day-long composition workshop aimed at young Welsh composers and musicians aged 14-18 (years 10-13). Participants will learn about writing music, different forms of musical notation, cutting edge new music, and the possibilities of different instruments – all in a friendly, supportive, and fun environment.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Taking place in Theatr Soar, Merthyr, participants will be given one-to-one help in support of writing a piece of music that lasts 1-3 minutes. Throughout the day they will have access to Uproar’s world-class performers (percussion, trumpet, clarinet, and viola) and Tredegar-born Welsh composer David John Roche. At the end of the day, each participant will have their work recorded, ready for them to use.
There is no preference for musical style and composers can write down their music by hand, use a computer, or write it on their instrument (or in their head). On the day, sheet music will need to be created and used in order for the musicians of Uproar to perform the newly-created pieces, but in-session support will be provided for this. Participants may also submit music in advance – we’re keen to support composers and musicians who are at different stages in their practice. Please get in touch!
